McAfee - Prepare Your Windows Computer to Download Consumer Products
Follow these steps to get your Windows PC ready to install your McAfee software.
Before you start:
- You might need to restart your PC to solve the issue, so bookmark or favorite this article to get back to it quickly.
- Ensure that your PC meets the minimum installation requirements shown in TS102471.
When you have verified that your PC meets the minimum requirements, do these steps in order:
Step 1: Ensure Windows is up-to-date
This helps to avoid issues with your McAfee software during and after installation.
- Click theStart button on the bottom left of your Windows desktop.
- In the search box:
- TypeWindows update.
- Press ENTER.
- ClickCheck for updates.
- Follow the prompts. Windows will download and apply any important updates.
NOTE: You can also follow the steps in the Microsoft Windows Update FAQ.
Step 2: Download and run the McAfee Pre-Install Tool
This prepares your PC for the installation of your McAfee software.
- Download the Pre-Install Tool.
NOTE: Save the file to a temporary location, such as your desktop.
- Double-click thePre-Install_Tool.exe file, and follow the prompts.
- Read the warning message, and clickOKto agree to the changes.
- After the Preinstall Tool completes:
- ClickOK.
- ClickClose.
- Restart your computer.
Step 3: Uninstall any existing security software
Remove any existing security products (anti-virus, firewalls, and so on) to avoid conflicts. This includes older McAfee software.

Step 4: Run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool
If you have ever had a McAfee product installed on your computer, you should run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool to clean up any old files.
IMPORTANT:
- Always download a new copy of MCPR before each use.
This ensures that you have the latest version, and that newer McAfee products can be successfully recognized. - MCPR will clean up only the components needed for reinstallation. It isnotdesigned to clean up 100% of components.
- Completing this step will require a restart.
Before you start:
- Bookmarkorfavoritethis article so that you can easily get back to it.
- Saveall open files.
- Closeall programs.
- Download the MCPR tool.
- Double-clickMCPR.exe.
- If you see a security warning:
ClickYes,Continue, orRun(depending on your version of Windows):
- At theMcAfee Software Removal screen:
- ClickNext.
- ClickAgreeto accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
- At theSecurity Validation screen:
- Type the characters exactly as shown on your screen (validation is case-sensitive).
- ClickNext. This step prevents the accidental use of MCPR.
- When the process is complete, you will see one of the following messages.Click the one that you see.
- Restart your PC to complete the removal process.
IMPORTANT: When your PC restarts, it will not be protected from viruses and malware. Ensure that you reinstall your security software as soon as possible to remain protected (see below).
- Restartyour PC and run MCPR again.
- If you seeCleanup Unsuccessful again, ignore it.
- Restart your PC again.
- Attempt to reinstall your McAfee software.
- Click here to contact Technical Support.
- Let the agent know:
- MCPR produced aCleanup Unsuccessfulmessage.
- You are unable to reinstall your McAfee software.
After completing these steps, your PC is ready to install the McAfee software.

- Temporarily disable pop-up or ad blockers
If your browser has a pop-up blocker,temporarily disable it. This reduces the possibility of it interfering with your installation.Look in theSettingsorOptionsmenu of your browser to disable your pop-up blocker, and remember to enable it again when your installation is complete.
- Run Windows Disk Defragmenter
Defragmenting your hard drives improves performance.
NOTE: If you have a Solid-State Disk (SSD) instead of a mechanical (spinning) hard drive, you donotneed to defragment it.To run the defragmenter:
- Click theStart button on the bottom left of your Windows desktop.
- In the search box, typedefragmentand press ENTER.
- On Windows10.x, and8.x:
- ClickDefragment and Optimize drives.
- ClickDefragment and Optimize drives.
- On Windows7.x:
- ClickDisk Defragmenter.
- On Windows10.x, and8.x:
